La directora ejecutiva, Nora Sándigo, le envió una carta al famoso matrimonio y esto fue lo que expuso.
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Estefan,
To many across this nation and undoubtedly across the world you have become a beacon of hope; a hope that there will always be someone fighting for equality, justice and freedom. As a leader of the non-profit organization American Fraternity, whose sole purpose is to aide those who are underrepresented, oppressed, or unjustly and inhumanely treated, I know first-hand the struggles and obstacles one is faced with. Moreover, to see anyone succeed and be as influential as you are in the difficult battle for human rights and against injustice gives me hope for a far brighter and happier future. This is one of the many things we have in common.
As you prepare for your battle against those who are unfairly imprisoned in Cuba, I prepare for the fight on behalf of many US-born children whose lives are being affected to a greater degree than anyone imagines. The beauty and magic of their childhood is being taken away from them just as their civil and human rights are being violated. Hundreds of thousands of children have been separated from their parents and are undergoing hardships due to the effects of immigration raids and deportations.
These children are U.S. Citizens by birth and are supposed to enjoy the very same rights delineated by the Constitution in the 14th Amendment. Unfortunately, what is occurring is quite the contrary. Nowhere in the constitution does it mention that the nationality of parents or ancestors is legal grounds to deprive a Citizen of hi/her civil rights. These children are facing major emotional, psychological and economic crises. They need the attention of doctors, social workers, therapists and psychologists to help cope with their guilt and paranoia after such a great loss. The protection of the basic needs and rights of the most vulnerable citizens of this country were overlooked when harsher and stricter immigration policies were implemented. Our most vulnerable citizens are paying the consequences of failed immigration policy.
When I saw the dire and ever-growing need in these children, the “Don’t Leave Me Alone” campaign was formed. American Fraternity does the best possible in bringing some sort of relief and help to them on a daily basis. The children that make up the campaign were present during last month’s rally for immigration reform in Washington DC. They have sent numerous amounts of letters to our President Barack Obama urging him to listen to their cries.
When I heard about the dinner you will be hosting for President Obama, all I kept thinking and picturing in my mind were the faces of these distraught children. This may be their once in a lifetime chance to meet face to face with their President. Please find it in your hearts to give the opportunity to one child to speak on behalf of hundreds of thousands of children for just one minute with President Obama. After all, the future of this nation lies within its youth – so why not invest in it and protect it! I look forward to hearing from you. I wish you all the best in all your endeavors as leaders and as humanitarians.
Mientras algunos aún celebran los cambios en la Reforma de Salud, la Reforma Migratoria sigue rezagada, a la espera de que la consideren lo suficientemente importante como para trabajar en ella. Ya en una ocasión había mencionado que el gobierno de Obama, primero trabajaría con el asunto de la salud, luego con la Reforma Energética, y una vez esta esté resuelta, quizás le toque el turno a la Reforma Migratoria. Y me pregunto, para ese entonces, ¿cuántas familias más habrán sido separadas?
